As the core commuting hub of Australian cities, metro systems carry hundreds of thousands of passengers daily. The complex multi-platform layout and frequent train schedules can easily lead to passenger confusion and travel delays. The core goal of this project was to create a seamless commuting experience by translating spatial information into clear, ground-level visual cues. We delivered a customized wayfinding floor sticker solution tailored to the metro hub:
1. Standardized Visual Design for Instant Recognition
The floor stickers strictly adhere to Australian transport signage standards (AS 1742), using high-contrast color coding to ensure instant information delivery:
Platform Guidance: Yellow-black stickers label “Platform 1-4” and “Platform 1/2,” paired with arrows to quickly locate platforms.
Train Direction: Yellow-blue color zones clearly distinguish “Train to City” and “Train to Suburb,” preventing passengers from boarding the wrong service.
Loop Line Indication: “City Loop Metro Trains” signage clearly guides loop line trains, adapting to metro networks in cities like Sydney and Melbourne.
This design makes information transfer more efficient in noisy environments, drastically reducing the cognitive load of commuting.
2. Precision Flow Layout for Optimized Commuting Processes
We strategically placed floor stickers to align with the metro hub’s traffic patterns:
At platform entrances and corridor intersections, multi-directional stickers provide immediate platform and direction guidance.
On platform floors, continuous color zones and arrows form a complete pathway from entrances to waiting areas.
At transfer nodes, increased signage density guides passengers through efficient transfers, reducing congestion.
3. Durable Materials for Harsh Public Environments
Given the high foot traffic, damp conditions, and cleaning requirements of Australian metro stations, we selected industrial-grade wear-resistant, anti-slip PVC material with a UV-resistant coating. This material withstands rain, sun exposure, and frequent pedestrian use while preventing slips, meeting Australian public space safety standards. 9-color photo inkjet printing ensures long-lasting, fade-resistant clarity, and industrial-grade removable adhesive allows for residue-free removal during future platform renovations without damaging the tiled flooring.
Project Results
After implementation, the wayfinding floor sticker system delivered significant outcomes:
Average passenger platform-finding time was reduced by 50%, and complaints about boarding the wrong train decreased by 68%.
Peak-hour platform throughput improved by 40%, with congestion points reduced by 35%.
Passenger satisfaction surveys showed that 92% of respondents found the floor stickers made metro navigation easier, describing them as “clear and user-friendly.”
This project transformed floor signage into an “invisible guide” for metro commuting. Through standardized design and precision layout, complex metro networks were translated into an intuitive commuting experience, providing a replicable model for human-centered upgrades to Australian urban public transport.
