Singapore’s international schools are known for their multicultural education ethos. The core goal of this project was to turn campus spaces into extended educational environments beyond the classroom. We delivered two thematic stair mural solutions tailored to the school’s vision: 1. Global Cultural Exploration Stairs: A Worldview in Every Step This mural series took “Around the World” as its theme, featuring iconic global landmarks and cultural symbols like the Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, and the Forbidden City on each step, paired with a rainbow gradient color palette. As students ascend and descend, their journey becomes a mini global tour, subtly exposing them to the cultural diversity of different countries and aligning with Singapore’s vision of nurturing “global citizens”. The vibrant, high-saturation colors create a striking contrast with the school’s modern, minimalist architecture. The detailed illustrations not only capture visual attention but also convey cultural knowledge, turning a functional passage into a lively cultural classroom.
2. Children’s Literary Journey Stairs: Visually Awakening a Love for Reading For the primary school staircase, we used the creative concept of a “stack of 3D books”. Classic children’s book covers such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Charlotte’s Web were painted onto the step risers, creating an immersive experience of “climbing on books”. Each step corresponds to a literary masterpiece, allowing students to engage with classic works intuitively as they move, effectively sparking their interest in independent reading.
The fonts and colors of the murals faithfully replicate the visual identity of the original book covers. The warm-toned book illustrations against the brick walls create a cozy atmosphere, transforming a narrow stairwell into a playful reading nook that students now enjoy gathering in during breaks.
This project elevated campus staircases beyond mere circulation routes to become educational carriers that connect knowledge with physical space. The two mural schemes, focusing on cultural awareness and reading motivation, created a “learning in every step” experience for the international school, offering an innovative model for integrating campus aesthetics with functional space design.
