As a medical hub serving a diverse population, the Singapore general hospital faced challenges of complex patient flow and high foot traffic during peak hours. The core goal of this project was to ensure patients with different needs could navigate to their target departments clearly and efficiently. We delivered a color-coded wayfinding floor sticker solution tailored to the hospital’s requirements:
1. Color-Coded System for Visual Hierarchy
We assigned distinct colors to each functional area, creating an intuitive visual recognition framework:
Emergency: High-visibility red for immediate recognition in critical situations
Pharmacy: Calming green to convey safety and reliability of medical services
Laboratory: Purple to distinguish specialized diagnostic areas
Radiology: Vibrant orange to enhance visibility and avoid confusion
Waiting Area: Neutral gray to create a calm and orderly atmosphere
This color-coded design allowed patients to anticipate directions simply by recognizing colors, drastically reducing identification and decision-making time.
2. Precision Layout for Full-Journey Coverage
Based on the hospital’s patient flow, we strategically placed the floor stickers to cover the entire patient journey:
At key diversion points like main entrances and triage desks, we installed multi-department composite floor stickers, enabling patients to identify core area directions immediately upon arrival.
In corridors leading to department entrances, we placed single-department directional stickers with repeated arrows and text, ensuring patients did not miss their target locations.
The color-coded system remained consistent across all floors, allowing patients to maintain spatial awareness when moving between levels and reducing the risk of getting lost.
3. Durable & Safe Materials for Healthcare Environments
Given the hospital’s high foot traffic and frequent cleaning cycles, we selected industrial-grade wear-resistant, anti-slip PVC material with a diagonal anti-slip film surface. This material withstands frequent rolling from wheelchairs and stretchers, while preventing slips from disinfectant spills—meeting Singapore’s safety standards for medical facilities. 9-color photo inkjet printing ensured long-lasting, fade-resistant colors, and the industrial-grade removable adhesive allowed for residue-free removal when departments were reconfigured, without damaging floor tiles.
Project Results
Following implementation, the wayfinding floor sticker system delivered significant outcomes:
Average patient navigation time was reduced by 62%, and peak-hour congestion points decreased by 45%.
Emergency patient response speed improved by 30%, minimizing delays in critical situations.
Patient satisfaction surveys showed that 84% of respondents found the floor stickers made hospital navigation clearer, reducing anxiety during their visit.
This project transformed floor signage into an “invisible guide” for the medical space. Through color coding and precision layout, complex hospital flows were translated into an intuitive visual language, providing an innovative model for spatial efficiency optimization in Singapore’s general hospitals.
